UNOPS in Bangladesh

With project support from its regional office in Bangkok and as an implementing partner to UNDP and the Government of Bangladesh, UNOPS supports two projects in Bangladesh, assisting with disaster management and police reform.

Bangladesh Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme Shunamgonj

UNOPS has also been involved in the implementation of several major UNDP projects in Bangladesh in the field of environment, poverty alleviation, gender, and governance, completed by mid 2000s.

Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme

A low-lying country with more than 230 waterways, Bangladesh is prone to natural disasters. The Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme aims to shift the focus from disaster response to comprehensive risk reduction.

In 2003 the Government of Bangladesh launched the programme together with the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development and the United Nations Development Programme. The European Commission became the third major partner in September 2006.

Police Reform Project

In 2005, the Government of Bangladesh, UNDP and the Department for International Development (DFID) launched the first phase of the Police Reform Programme that aims at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Bangladesh Police by supporting key areas of access to justice; including investigations, police operations and prosecutions; human resource management and training; and strategic capacity and oversight.

The programme is being implemented by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Bangladesh Police. The European Commission is also a major partner in the programme. The total budget is US$16.69 million.
