AMMAN - Officials from the Iraq Ministry of Human Rights have participated in training to promote human rights messages in the media, a central part of the Ministry’s strategy to establish a human rights culture in Iraq.
The training, conducted in both Baghdad and Amman, included an introduction to human rights including freedoms of expression and information, interview technique, media report writing, web skills, print design, documentary film production and public relations. It emphasized the promotion, protection and respect of human rights in Iraq.
Due to the growing popularity of ‘new media’ techniques such as blogging and YouTube across the Middle East, the media practitioners were also trained in the use of these technologies. The sessions include a practical element where the participants used the acquired skills to begin a Human Rights Media Campaign.
In consultation with the Government of Iraq, a programme to support the Rule of Law and Justice in Iraq was prepared by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq and UNOPS. The human rights and media training workshop is designed and implemented by UNOPS in cooperation with Albany Associates and is funded by the European Union through UNDP.
