Thu, 25 Jun 2009

PORT-AU-PRINCE - Construction of a new headquarters for the Inspectorate General of Police in Port-au-Prince has begun with the Prime Minister of Haiti, Michèle Duvivier Pierre-Louis, and the Ambassador of Canada officially laying the foundation stone.

The Inspectorate General is responsible for investigating public complaints and human rights violations of the Haitian National Police (HNP). It is also responsible for assessing the efficiency with which the HNP carries out its mission by managing the human, logistical and financial assets of the force. The new complex will accommodate between 100 and 120 employees and is designed to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes.

The building is part of the United Nations Development Program  Stabilisation and Reconstruction Programme that aims to strengthen the rule of law and guarantee stability in the country.

The programme, underway since 2006, includes construction of new infrastructure, procurement of vehicles and office equipment, as well as community outreach initiatives that aim to improve public confidence in the force.

This project is managed by UNDP and financed by the Government of Canada, through its Global Peace and Security Fund. The construction of the new headquarters is being implemented by UNOPS.
