LIMA - More than 92,000 Peruvian National Police officers will be provided with new uniforms in 2009 as part of a project to support the modernization of the Peruvian Ministry of the Interior.
The new uniforms consist of more than one million individual items ranging from basic jackets and bluish-green trousers through to bonnets, suits, tassels and black leather shoes. The new design is part of a major project aimed at the administrative and technical modernisation of the Ministry of the Interior and will contribute to creating a stronger corporate image for the Peruvian police.
The procurement of the uniforms has been conducted within the framework of the Management Services Agreement signed between the Peruvian Ministry of the Interior (MININTER) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
UNOPS Peru Operations Centre procured and delivered the uniforms. This involved several procurement processes, ranging from fabric manufacture and tailoring to quality control. The manufacture of the uniforms created employment in the Peruvian textile industry.
The garments were presented to the Peruvian National Police at a handover ceremony held in the city of Lima in June. The Peruvian Minister of the Interior, Ms. Mercedes Cabanillas Bustamante, and the UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Jorge L. Chediek were among the guests. The Director General of the Peruvian National Police, José Sánchez Farfán, other high-ranking officials and representatives from UNOPS Peru were also present at the ceremony.
