New Sudan ministry building spurs southern reconstruction

Fri, 12 Dec 2008

RUMBEK - A new Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources building opened on 10 December in Rumbek, Sudan, as part of a $25 million programme to reconstruct the southern part of the country, a region hit hard by civil conflict and drought.

The building is a component of the Sudan Productive Capacity Recovery Programme (SPCRP) funded by the European Commission (EC), implemented by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and sub-contracted to the UNOPS Sudan Operations Centre.

UNOPS is procuring goods, services and civil works to provide the Government of South Sudan with five state and 14 county buildings by September 2009.

According to the Sudan Tribune this is the first time such a development project has been completed in the Lakes State since it was formed in 2005.

The Sudan Productive Capacity Recovery Programme is a four-year project which includes civil works, transportation facilities, budgetary support, training and business development to help State Ministries of Agriculture, Animal Resources and Irrigation re-establish a presence across Sudan.
