COPENHAGEN – UNOPS helped its partners deliver more than $1 billion worth of projects in 2008, according to UNOPS 2008 Annual Report, now published in an abridged and easy-to-download format in English, French and Spanish.
In 2008 UNOPS helped its partners build schools, roads, bridges, clinics, hospitals, prisons and police stations. It supported partners train teachers, journalists, health workers and government officials and organized mass education efforts for elections and disaster preparedness. On behalf of its partners it procured goods ranging from vehicles to medical supplies. It managed funds and administered thousands of small grants.
UNOPS largest partner according to the report is the United Nations Development Program with the Division of Peacekeeping Operations the second largest. Other major partners included UNICEF and the World Bank.
In addition to summarizing UNOPS operations and financial results for 2008 the report presents activities by sectors: education, emergency response and humanitarian relief, environment, gender, governance, health, justice, security and public order, local economic development and public works.
The report includes a success story for each of these sectors providing concrete examples of UNOPS in action around the globe.
