As Director of Sudan Operations Centre, I find the sheer diversity of the challenges we face both exciting and rewarding. It is extremely satisfying to see the real improvements in the lives of the people we serve. The nature of UNOPS work lends itself to concrete outcomes that directly benefit the lives of the Sudanese people – and it is great to be able to work with such visible results. The work we do at UNOPS really makes a difference, and we clearly have a role to play in the humanitarian, early recovery and development agenda.

As OC Director, I am responsible for about 200 personnel on 15 different projects – working on infrastructure and construction projects building roads, hospitals and education facilities, as well as projects on governance, security and capacity building.

I think I have one of the most dynamic and fun jobs in UNOPS. A typical day for me can involve anything from representing the United Nations Country Team at the opening of the Midwives Initiative to encouraging our drivers to slow down and buckle up. No two days are the same. For example, I can be involved in strategic planning, and meetings with our partners and clients and at the same time need to be “hands-on” securing a bed in a clinic for a colleague suffering from malaria or typhoid.

UNOPS is an agency that allows staff to grow - it is a very open and inclusive organization, so junior staff in the field can participate in our global discussion groups – everyone is able to contribute to our corporate debates and all voices are heard.
