Based in Nairobi, Kenya Nationality: British Background/ Qualifications: BSc in Management Science, currently studying for Chartered Institute for Purchasing and Supply (CIPS)-Level 3
Has been working at UNOPS for almost two years |
The best aspect of working in procurement at UNOPS is that you are constantly learning – it could be anything from the latest innovations in technology, new products and services, processes in the supply chain and procurement industry both globally and locally etc. Knowing that I will still be learning in 30 years time is refreshing and exciting.
UNOPS provides many opportunities to develop professionally. In addition to frequent UNOPS procurement training and workshops my colleagues and myself have also given the opportunity to study for the CIPS Qualifications which is a globally recognized professional certification. Regardless of the background, UNOPS staff are always encouraged to take up courses for learning e.g. UN languages and project management such as Prince 2.
UNOPS combines both aspects of the private sector and the public sector. As UNOPS is a self financing body we have to ensure timely delivery of our services to clients while following UN rules and regulations. This unique status ensures we “get things done” with transparency and accountability. This relative efficiency in achieving the aim to improve the lives of people in need is the most rewarding part of working at UNOPS.
The team spirit in UNOPS is fantastic and knowledge sharing is one example of this (through our Communities of practice - where there is always helpful information shared amongst the network of practitioners). Working here, you are a “global citizen” always meeting interesting people from different backgrounds. UNOPS employees move to different regions of the world and thus UNOPS is constantly evolving as people bring their experiences and expertise to each region.
The UN is a world within a world. Working as part of the UN is inspiring – and it epitomizes what we as humans can achieve if we all work together for the betterment of mankind.
