It is great to be able to use my experience to contribute to development goals. I am currently working as part of the Emergency Response Unit in Sri Lanka, where we have recently delivered emergency relief works to internally displaced people in northern Sri Lanka, providing over 3,500 emergency shelters, 2,500 tents, 1,000 toilets, and 6 million litres of drinking water. We are also working on livelihood programs to provide stability for local people, with a focus on participation and involvement.

Prior to working at UNOPS, I worked in an Australian based private company, as a project engineer, and this background and experience has been extremely beneficial to my current work at UNOPS. Since joining UNOPS, I have been involved in many projects to support post-tsunami rehabilitation, for example, we completed a housing project in the eastern part of Sri Lanka, building a whole new town for residents, replacing the earlier village which was washed away.

I have recently been promoted and am now managing several projects at a time under one programme, dealing with different kinds of project donors and learning tools and skills in ethics management. I can sense that I am part of a wider global team, working towards a common goal. I pride myself on working in an environment of trust and integrity. It is important to me that we get things right first time and are as efficient as possible. This is how we can make a real difference for people in need.

It is immensely challenging and enjoyable to work in such an international environment - I know that I am a small part of a giant tree, where you don’t see the next branch but always know it is there.
