What I like about my job is that I am given the independence and the organizational support to change and improve efficiencies in our operations. I am also acutely aware of how my role fits into the wider plan for mine action work in Afghanistan and can clearly see the value of the work we do.
I can see the difference that we make by delivering services efficiently and effectively. As a result of this we can either invest more money in our projects or divert money for other important projects. Secondly, it is enormously satisfying to contribute towards solving the mine action problem in Afghanistan, which in turn has a major impact on economic development in the country.
Before joining UNOPS, I worked in the technology sector, as a business analyst and in business development, managing relationships with strategic partners in mobile communications.
In my role, a commercial or a legal background is really valuable, and my experience from the private sector is very useful as a benchmark or comparison.
I enjoy the combination of cost effectiveness and service delivery. UNOPS is results driven and therefore able to deliver more efficient services.
Working for the UN is inspiring, albeit sometimes frustrating, but it is always exciting, especially in the field of Mine Action where we work in some far-flung places.
