Supporting Ukraine’s health sector with the Government of Japan

The Central Clinical Hospital of the State Border Guard Service in Kiev is one of six hospitals to benefit from a project aimed at improving diagnostic procedures in the country.

The Government of Japan donated a CT scanner, X-ray machine and endoscopy equipment – with a total value of $860,000 – to the hospital on 13 January 2017.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine Viktor Nazarenko, Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine H. E. Shigeki Sumi and UNOPS Deputy Executive Director Vitaly Vanshelboim attended the handover ceremony.

"This valuable donation is an important symbol of good cooperation between Ukraine, Japan and the UN. The medical equipment from the people of Japan will help people in Ukraine get better medical treatment," said President Poroshenko.

The new endoscopy equipment will speed up examinations and enable the timely diagnosis of the early stages of cancer. The new X-ray machine will reduce the time it takes to get results from 25 minutes to just 1 minute. X-ray images will also be shareable through the Internet.

"The Government of Japan considers health as the most important part of human life. This donation of medical equipment from Japan will contribute to saving the lives of all patients," said Ambassador Sumi.
