Action at scale – For people and the planet

In 2024, UNOPS reaffirmed its commitment to helping tackle key global challenges and responding where needs are greatest.

In collaboration with the UN family, governments and other partners, we continued our work supporting conflict and crisis response efforts, managing critical peace and security operations, and helping to advance sustainable, resilient and inclusive development.

“In the face of the biggest global challenges, we remain dedicated to getting the job done, for a more peaceful, fairer and greener world for all. Always in partnerships. Always for the benefit of those left behind,” said UNOPS Executive Director Jorge Moreira da Silva.

Impact for the people we serve

Last year, UNOPS delivered projects in more than 130 countries and territories, with more than 66 per cent of our work delivered in special or fragile situations.

This included in Afghanistan, where UNOPS and the World Bank are building community resilience and promoting livelihoods – benefitting over 14 million people. In Gaza, where we supported critical UN humanitarian efforts. In Sudan, where we are helping improve access to health services for 2.8 million vulnerable people. And in Ukraine, where UNOPS enhanced demining activities to support communities impacted by the war.

UNOPS procured $1.7 billion in goods and services for partners in 2024 – including fuel supplies in Gaza, medical drones in Maldives and hundreds of ambulances in Ecuador. And together with partners, we worked to improve access to essential infrastructure, including health, education and renewable energy.

In support of countries facing significant development challenges, as well as those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, we helped build resilience, strengthen local and national capacity, and enable sustainable and inclusive development.

30 years of responding to urgent needs

The report also highlights some of the ways UNOPS has helped address urgent needs and deliver on the UN’s mission of peace, prosperity and dignity for all, over three decades of service. From building hundreds of earthquake-resistant schools in post-tsunami Indonesia, to helping clear millions of square metres of land to free Nepal from landmines, to providing Ebola response support across West Africa.

For three decades, across development, peace and humanitarian operations, UNOPS has provided practical solutions to help ensure that the work of the United Nations is carried out efficiently, effectively and sustainably.

Our focus ahead

As we look to 2025 and beyond, UNOPS is dedicated to scaling up and speeding up – to advance peace and sustainable development, accelerate climate action, address implementation gaps and ensure we leave no one behind.

To support these efforts, in 2024, UNOPS launched several key initiatives:

UNOPS also completed a comprehensive set of reforms assigned to the organization by our Executive Board, which are part of our ongoing transformation journey to ensure we provide ever more effective solutions for our partners.

“As we look to the future, we want to ensure – through our mandate on implementation – that we take determined action that is focused on solutions, driven by clear missions and dedicated to creating impact for the people we serve,” said Jorge Moreira da Silva.
