Mission: Energy transition

Accelerating the transition to sustainable energy drives positive change – for people and the planet.

people remain without access to clean cooking

Around the world, some 685 million people live without access to reliable electricity.

Expanding access to clean, reliable and affordable energy has the power to transform lives: from improved access to healthcare and education, to reduced time poverty and added safety and security.

Through this mission, UNOPS is committed to accelerating the shift to sustainable energy solutions.

We believe a just energy transition is key to fostering socio-economic development, tackling the climate emergency, and shaping a more sustainable future – for people and the planet.

How we support

Through strong partnerships and collaboration, we provide practical solutions to help partners plan, deliver and manage their energy infrastructure, while harnessing sustainable and efficient procurement processes to rapidly deliver tailored energy solutions.

We’re dedicated to building capacity and empowering local stakeholders to drive the renewable energy transition. We also support governments’ efforts to mobilize funding and resources to ensure equitable access to clean energy technologies.

  • Humanitarian and fragile and conflict-affected situations

We leverage our experience working in fragile and conflict-affected situations to combine community-based solutions with robust emergency preparedness.

  • Promoting economic growth

We support ‘Productive Use of Electricity’ projects to promote economic development, by enabling income-generating activities and fostering entrepreneurship in communities with limited energy access.

  • Energy efficiency for reduced demand

We drive large-scale energy efficiency and decarbonization across infrastructure projects through building retrofits, utility collaboration, low-carbon technology support, and sustainable practices in transportation and agriculture.

  • Sustainable off-grid energy solutions

We promote mini-grids and other distributed renewable energy solutions as a cost-effective solution for electrifying rural areas – expanding access to clean and affordable power for vulnerable populations and improving the resilience of critical infrastructure.

  • Energizing health care and other critical public services

We improve the delivery of healthcare services in underserved areas by providing clean, reliable and affordable electricity to health facilities, schools and other critical public services.

  • Fund management

We manage funds for various multilateral initiatives to drive climate action and support partners to achieve their development priorities.

  • Sustainable procurement

We provide procurement services to governments and partners and promote sustainable procurement practices that help protect natural resources, advance equality, and drive sustainable socio-economic development.

  • On-grid energy infrastructure and grid modernization

We help countries modernize their energy grids and deploy smart grid technologies to improve energy efficiency and resilience, particularly in the Global South.

In action

How solar energy is powering hospitals and schools in Sierra Leone

UNOPS is working with the government of Sierra Leone to develop solar mini-grid and standalone renewable energy systems with funding from the World Bank. The project will provide some 3,000 households, 500 schools, 350 businesses and 200 health facilities with access to electricity.
