UNOPS has been serving people in Afghanistan since 1995 – supporting partners' contributions to the humanitarian response and development of the country.
In response to intensifying humanitarian needs, our work is helping to further humanitarian initiatives and address the basic needs of vulnerable people. This includes managing cash-for-work projects, procuring emergency medical equipment and supplies, and administering an inter-agency communications and accountability centre that connects people with humanitarian assistance information across the country.

                          UNOPS impact in Afghanistan

                                  - Managing the Afghanistan Community Resilience and Livelihoods Project, which helps provide short-term livelihoods and income opportunities for vulnerable Afghans. So far, nearly 900,000 people have been employed in over 5,000 labour-intensive and cash-for-work activities, with over 9 million Afghans benefitting overall.
- Supporting the Water Emergency Relief Project to improve access to safe drinking water and irrigation services in rural areas. In compliance with the World Bank’s Assessment and Management of Environmental and Social Risks and Impacts, other relevant environmental and social standards as well as national laws, UNOPS prepared and adopted an Environmental and Social Management Framework for the project. This establishes procedures and methodologies for environmental and social screening and management, review, approval and implementation of investments to be financed under the project.
- Improved accessibility to basic services through the construction and rehabilitation of more than 10,000 km of roads.
