Two new facilities – the Agricultural Exhibition Centre and a cold storage facility – are now fully operational in Herat, providing vital support to the region’s agricultural sector and strengthening local livelihoods.

Funded by the government of Japan and implemented by UNOPS, the project marks a significant step forward in expanding economic opportunities for farmers and small businesses, including women entrepreneurs from Herat and surrounding provinces.

Japan stands with the people of Afghanistan by supporting initiatives that help communities build stronger and more secure futures.

“We are proud to see farmers and small businesses – including many women – already benefiting from these new facilities in Herat. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with UNOPS to create lasting opportunities,” added Takayoshi Kuromiya.

The project also improved two key access roads, totaling 6.5 kilometres, which were redesigned and upgraded to enhance transport links and make it easier for farmers to bring their goods to market.

Earlier this year, a pilot event at the facilities brought together 130 female and 70 male business owners. The event showcased the exhibition centre’s potential to support entrepreneurs and strengthen the local economy.

These new facilities are more than just buildings – they are creating real opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs to grow, connect, and thrive.

“Thanks to Japan’s continued partnership, communities now have better access to markets and stronger foundations for sustainable livelihoods and a more hopeful future,” he added.

The project, which received $8.7 million from the government of Japan, has improved agricultural productivity, enhanced market access and bolstered economic resilience in the region. Driven by strong community engagement, the project lays the groundwork for a more resilient agricultural future in Herat.
