The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)
Resignation of Executive Director
UNOPS today announced that Grete Faremo has resigned as Executive Director.
Up-to-date information on UNOPS action plan to address issues related to S3i can be found here.
“It has been my great privilege to lead UNOPS. I continue to be proud of UNOPS’ achievements and unprecedented growth over these last eight years,” Ms. Faremo said. “While we still do not yet know the extent of the failures in connection with the Sustainable Infrastructure Investments and Innovation (S3i) initiative, we do know that they occurred on my watch and I acknowledge my responsibility and have decided to step down.”
“I hope my decision will allow UNOPS to focus on its vital work uplifting the lives of vulnerable people around the world,” she added.
In December 2021, Ms. Faremo placed the Chief Executive of S3i on administrative leave upon learning of an investigation by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS). UNOPS does not have access to this investigation report and eagerly awaits to learn the outcome of the review and analysis of its findings by the Secretary-General.
The organization is committed to working closely with the office of the Secretary-General during this transition and is already implementing continuity plans to ensure Ms. Faremo's departure will not affect regular project activities.
