Strengthening IGSS hospital network in Guatemala
An essential healthcare programme moves into a new phase as UNOPS and the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) partner to expand its hospital network with two new facilities.
The start of construction on two hospitals in Zacapa and Guatemala City marks a new chapter for the INFRAIGSS programme – an initiative aimed at enhancing the organization’s response capacity, which has benefited more than 3 million people over the past five years.
“We are proud to build on our long-standing partnership with IGSS, helping to ensure timely, high-quality care for its insured population,” said Andrea Calvaruso, UNOPS Country Director in Guatemala

“By drawing on UNOPS global expertise in procurement and infrastructure, we are committed to helping build health systems that are sustainable, inclusive and resilient to future shocks – leaving no one behind and ensuring a safer future for all,” he added.
The two new hospitals have been designed with sustainability, inclusivity and adaptability at their core – featuring solar rooftops to improve energy efficiency, large outdoor terraces for patients, families and staff, a psychological care clinic, lactation rooms, and more. In critical situations such as a pandemic, each hospital’s capacity can also be expanded without the need for major structural modifications.
In addition, UNOPS will equip both hospitals with necessary equipment, while technical training and post-delivery support will also be provided to ensure optimal and sustainable operations.
“We are bringing health services closer to the population. The IGSS Board of Directors is firmly focused on creating the necessary conditions for Social Security to reach every corner of the country,” said José Adolfo Flamenco Jau, President of the IGSS Board of Directors.
