Strengthening road infrastructure and safer mobility in Panama
A new partnership between UNOPS and the government of Panama will enhance road maintenance and promote safer mobility across the country.
From improving traffic flow to repairing damaged road surfaces, road maintenance and effective infrastructure management helps reduce accidents, extend the lifespan of infrastructure and improve safety for road users.
Through a $70 million agreement with Panama’s Ministry of Public Works, UNOPS is helping strengthen the country’s road network through sustainable and efficient practices.
The initiative supports the rehabilitation of roads and critical facilities and optimizes infrastructure management through asset management systems and digital platforms. Through enhanced planning, procurement, technical assistance, and preventive maintenance, as well as the provision of technical training and innovative tools, the project will strengthen the Ministry's capacity to manage the nation's road network, buildings, and equipment.
During the official signing ceremony, the Minister of Public Works, José Luis Andrade, expressed his appreciation for UNOPS support and called for continued collaboration to deliver meaningful results for the country.
This initiative is about people and the opportunities it will create for Panamanian families.
“It will help children get to school safely, ensure patients can reach healthcare services on time, enable producers, traders, and businesses to transport their goods efficiently and much more,” she added.
As part of the project, UNOPS will also support the transition toward a circular economy in road infrastructure through technical advice to assess asphalt production capacity, evaluate sustainable pavement technologies, and explore opportunities to incorporate recycled materials into road construction and maintenance.
