Strengthening the fight against cholera in Lagos, Nigeria
To reinforce cholera emergency response, UNOPS procured more than 150,000 units of life-saving supplies for the Lagos State Ministry of Health, with funding from the government of Japan.
As of late November 2024, an outbreak of cholera in Nigeria had affected more than 77,000 people across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with more than 350 deaths. Lagos State alone accounted for more than 20 per cent of the reported cholera cases nationwide.
To reinforce cholera response and preparedness efforts across Nigeria’s most populous state, UNOPS procured more than 150,000 units of medical, diagnostic, and water, sanitation and hygiene supplies for the Lagos State Ministry of Health, with funding from the government of Japan.
Cholera outbreaks require swift, coordinated and well-resourced interventions. The successful delivery of over 150,000 critical supplies reflects our commitment to efficient procurement and rapid emergency response.
Benefitting an estimated 17 million people across 5 Local Government Areas – Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Kosofe, Lagos Island and Lagos Mainland – heavily impacted by cholera, the procured items support disease surveillance, case management, infection prevention and control measures, as well as community-level risk reduction.
"Japan, which suffered devastating losses from a major cholera outbreak 160 years ago, believes – based on its experience – it must be entirely possible to bring cholera mortality to zero," said H.E. Ambassador Hideo Suzuki.
