Financed by the World Bank, the 'Somalia - Horn of Africa Infrastructure Integration Project' (SHIIP) is part of a larger programme encouraging economic development and structural transformation by enhancing regional integration in the Horn of Africa.

The project will drive Somalia’s economic growth by improving regional connectivity through strategic transport infrastructure – facilitating trade, tourism and investment, and reinforcing Mogadishu’s role as a Horn of Africa commercial hub.

UNOPS is providing technical assistance to the government of Somalia in several areas, including conducting feasibility studies, undertaking environmental and social impact assessments, developing master plans and engineering designs for several economic corridors as well as the new Mogadishu International Airport.

The initial work is already underway, with a kick-off meeting organized by Somalia's Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation marking the official start for the development of a master plan, feasibility study and related preparatory work for the new Mogadishu International Airport.

The development of the airport will respond to growing passenger and cargo needs.

"This feasibility study is the first and essential step. It will help the government make informed decisions based on sound technical, environmental and social analysis," said Ala Arman, UNOPS Head of Programme in Somalia. "It lays the foundation for future investment and long-term development."

“This work is fully aligned with the government’s broader development priorities and our commitment to building resilient infrastructure and strong institutions,” said Somalia's Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation Omar Ali Afrah.
