Global Goal supported:

Through $4.6 million in funding from the government of Japan, UNOPS will help improve the efficiency of customs clearance procedures by procuring cargo inspection devices and other essential items to enhance customs operations.

Improvement and modernization of customs procedures is expected to help reduce time and associated costs for importing goods, including essential humanitarian cargo.

The project will further provide Customs Authority’s Disaster Recovery Site with the IT infrastructure needed to integrate Yemeni Customs with the latest global customs information systems. This will create a centralized data facility that is vital for protecting Yemen’s customs information against disruptions and fosters long-term operational resilience.

“The project is important to revitalizing and modernizing Yemeni Customs, while enhancing efficiency,” said Muhammad Usman Akram, Representative and Director of UNOPS Multi-Country Office in Amman.

“UNOPS remains committed to supporting the efforts of the government of Yemen towards reconstruction and sustainable development, with the valuable support of the international community,” he added.

Improving the operational capacity of the customs authority will strengthen Yemeni domestic governance, secure key sea lanes, and enhance economic growth. Ultimately, these efforts reinforce Yemen’s commitment to regional stability and maritime security.

"By enhancing customs infrastructure and capacity, this assistance strengthens the rule of law, supports revenue collection for the national economy, and safeguards and facilitates essential supply chains including humanitarian assistance for the Yemeni people," said H.E. Mr. Yoichi Nakashima, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Yemen.
