President von der Leyen visits new EU co-funded Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences premises in Pristina
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen today visited the newly constructed premises of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMNS) at the University of Pristina, co-funded by the European Union with almost €12 million and set to benefit more than 2,400 students and academic staff
The new facilities provide modern spaces for learning, research and collaboration across mathematics and the natural sciences, supporting the next generation of scientists, researchers and innovators in Kosovo.
During the visit, President von der Leyen spoke with FMNS students about their experiences in research, innovation and international academic exchange, as well as their aspirations for the future.
The new premises include specialized laboratories, a large library, and teaching and collaborative spaces for mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and geography. They are co-funded by the European Union, the University of Pristina and the Ministry of Education and Science, with works implemented by UNOPS.
The visit highlights how EU investment, together with the commitment of local partners and UNOPS implementation expertise, can translate into high-quality infrastructure that creates opportunities for students, researchers and communities. I'm immensely proud of the UNOPS team and our partners who helped bring this important project to life."
This joint EU-Kosovo investment responds to a long-standing need for dedicated FMNS premises and supports the University of Pristina’s efforts to strengthen its teaching and research environment.
Sustainability and accessibility are integral to the new facility, which includes energy-efficient systems, solar panels, a green roof and facilities designed for a diverse student and academic community. It also includes a dedicated room for breastfeeding mothers and young children, the first such facility at a university in Kosovo.
The investment also includes landscaping, green study spaces, sports facilities and children’s playgrounds for the university community and surrounding neighbourhood.
Concluding the visit, President von der Leyen, together with Prime Minister Albin Kurti and FMNS students, unveiled a plaque inaugurating the new faculty premises.
President von der Leyen’s visit underscored the EU’s continued support, as Kosovo’s strongest partner and largest provider of financial assistance, for higher education and research, and for creating opportunities for students, academics and researchers to contribute to Kosovo’s European future.
