In the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, health facilities are struggling to meet the urgent needs of people affected by conflict. This includes the Izium Central City Hospital, damaged by shelling in March 2022, where essential units, such as the intensive care and reception departments, have been functioning at severely reduced capacity. As a result, nearly 150,000 residents of the Izium District face limited access to vital medical care. This also places an additional strain on regional hospitals that urgently require medical equipment upgrades to meet the demand. The medical system of the entire region is under stress.

To help, UNOPS and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) are working together to strengthen the capacity of four health facilities in the Kharkiv region through the procurement of high-quality medical equipment. This equipment, procured by UNOPS with over $5 million in funding from KSrelief, is essential for both in-patient and out-patient services – including surgery, trauma care, intensive care, diagnostics and radiology.

“This project reflects UNOPS commitment to supporting urgent humanitarian response and long-term development. It addresses immediate needs in the context of conflict while also strengthening healthcare for the people of Ukraine. Together with KSrelief and local authorities, we are meeting urgent needs, restoring hope, and laying the foundations for a sustainable recovery,” he added.” said Jorge Moreira da Silva, UNOPS Executive Director.

KSrelief is pleased to support the Ukrainian medical sector by partnering with UNOPS to provide the equipment needed to save and improve lives.

“We commend the dedication and commitment of health care professionals in Ukraine, who continue to do their best to provide the best possible care to their patients under extremely difficult conditions,” said Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Supervisor General of KSrelief.

“Together with our valued partners, KSrelief, as the humanitarian arm of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, will continue to work towards serving people around the world and providing hope for a better future,” he added.

The project will elevate the quality of healthcare services and strengthen the region’s ability to respond to emergencies. By equipping hospitals with modern technology, UNOPS and KSrelief are supporting Ukraine’s health system to build resilience in the face of the ongoing conflict.

“The Kharkiv Region faces serious challenges related to the ongoing full-scale invasion by Russia. Ensuring that quality medical services are available to our community members and internally displaced persons is vital under these circumstances,” remarked Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the Kharkiv Regional Administration.
