Strengthening conflict prevention in Mali
A project in San and Koutiala regions is helping lay the foundations for inclusive and sustainable local peace by preventing violence related to access to natural resources and climate change.
With funding from the UN Peacebuilding Fund, UNOPS is working with the government of Mali to prevent violence related to access to, use of and governance of natural resources in the country’s San and Koutiala regions.
These regions face social, environmental and institutional vulnerabilities, worsened by the effects of climate change and persistent limitations in local land governance – factors that could fuel conflicts and weaken social cohesion.
The 'Prevention of Conflict-related Violence over Natural Resources and Climate Change in San and Koutiala' project will strengthen the capacity of local communities and institutions to manage natural resources efficiently, equitably and peacefully.
This project will increase community resilience and social dynamics by strengthening local governance and establishing inclusive spaces for dialogue where each stakeholder actively contributes to conflict prevention.
The project will strengthen existing mediation and conflict prevention mechanisms, engage women and youth as full-fledged actors in peacebuilding, and institutionalize multi-stakeholder dialogue frameworks that integrate land, climate and social issues.
Implemented in close collaboration with several government ministries, the project supports national peacebuilding efforts and aligns with Mali's commitments regarding land governance, climate action and gender equality.
