The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)
Supporting Brazil's humanitarian assistance operations
UNOPS is supporting the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) to deliver essential humanitarian assistance to countries affected by disasters and crises.
From vaccines and medical supplies to food and water purifiers, UNOPS facilitated the procurement and delivery of critical supplies to 22 countries in emergency situations in 2025, including Caribbean nations affected by Hurricane Melissa.
Under an agreement signed in 2021, UNOPS partnership with the Brazilian Cooperation Agency provides logistical support for the procurement of supplies, as well as national and international coordination. This includes transportation – including customs clearance among other critical steps – and monitoring of deliveries in partner countries, ensuring transparency in line with international humanitarian standards.
For fragile supplies like vaccines, UNOPS carefully monitors the integrity of the shipments during delivery, using remote technology that transmits location and temperatures in real time.
In many cases, humanitarian aid operations must navigate complex logistical hurdles – from overwhelmed airports following Hurricane Melissa to political instability in Haiti.
“There is rigorous care and diligence in transportation to ensure that the items arrive intact at their destinations. Humanitarian cooperation has a direct impact on food security, access to drinking water, and support for healthcare assistance in the countries involved,” added Cecilia Abdo.
In addition to supporting the Brazilian Cooperation Agency’s emergency and early recovery operations, UNOPS supports technical missions and training programmes to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response in Brazil and other countries affected by disasters.
