UNOPS has supported the Government of Afghanistan with its national reconstruction and development efforts since 1995, in collaboration with donor governments, UN organizations and other partners.

In support of the Government and the construction industry of the country, UNOPS is providing advisory, implementation and transactional services in the areas of project management, infrastructure and procurement.

With national ownership and capacity development as key priorities, UNOPS is providing training and advice to its partners to help strengthen their administrative, human resources and management processes. For example, as part of this support to the Ministry of Public Works, hundreds of engineers have been trained in surveying, tendering, contract management, quality control, English literacy and more.

In Afghanistan, UNOPS has supported the Government in the rehabilitation of more than 10,000 kilometres of road, created more than 13 million days of paid work, rehabilitated airports and hospitals, and designed and constructed schools, in addition to helping rural communities establish livelihoods projects for women.
