Boosting agricultural productivity in Chad
UNOPS is supporting the government of Chad's efforts to strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of the country’s agricultural sector, with financing from the World Bank.
In Chad, agriculture is the backbone of the national economy, contributing 54 per cent to its Gross Domestic Product in 2021. Despite strong potential for diversifying production and developing complementary and dynamic agricultural and pastoral value chains, production remains limited and productivity has seen little progress over the past 60 years.
With support from the World Bank, the government of Chad is implementing the Inclusive Agribusiness and Rural Transformation (ProAGRI) project. This project will help strengthen the resilience, competitiveness and inclusivity of agricultural value chains in several provinces across the country.
With $6.9 million in financing from the World Bank, UNOPS will procure around 140 motorcycles, boats and other vehicles, as well as 1,900 tons of fertilizer and specialized laboratory equipment, on behalf of the government as part of the project.
Through this support, we are working with our partners to create the conditions for inclusive, sustainable and opportunity-generating agricultural growth for both local communities and refugees.
The procured items will help strengthen the toxicology laboratory at the Food Quality Control Center, ensuring the safety of Chadian food products, especially sesame, maize, fruits and vegetables.
The items will also help improve technical capabilities, especially in regards to sample preservation, sterilization, microbiological analysis, pest identification and product protection against potential contamination.
