Increasing access to education in Ethiopia
UNOPS is building schools in underserved regions of Ethiopia, with funding from the government of Italy.
A project to build new schools for underserved areas has officially launched with the handover of a project site for Gazanche Primary School in Gurage Zone.
"This handover is a tangible demonstration of our shared commitment to reducing disparities and promoting inclusive development," said Worknesh Mekonnen, Director of UNOPS Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office and Representative to the African Union "We are creating real opportunities for the next generation."
UNOPS is building the school – along with Ambo Secondary School in West Shewa Zone – as part of a €4.2 million project with the government of Italy.
The new school will feature climate-resilient infrastructure, modern classrooms, libraries, administrative spaces, and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities to safeguard health and well-being.
"Investing in a school means investing in the stability and development of a community," said H.E. Ambassador Sem Fabrizi. "In Gazanche, Italy is supporting more accessible, inclusive and dignified education, responding to the real needs of students and their families.”
Once completed, more than 4,000 students and their families will benefit from the new schools, fostering socio-economic development and enabling brighter futures for these historically underserved communities.
