Meeting evolving global needs through impactful procurement
The latest ‘Purchase for Impact’ report highlights how UNOPS procurement efforts supported partners to deliver critical infrastructure, essential services and humanitarian aid in 2024.
Procurement is more than just a process – it's a powerful tool for positive change. It can drive sustainable development, advance equality and build resilience in communities around the world.
From delivering essential supplies to internally displaced persons in Gaza to providing solar energy to remote communities in Papua New Guinea, the scale and complexity of procurement at UNOPS has grown.
For three decades, UNOPS has used its procurement expertise to bridge the implementation gap, evolving with increasingly complex global demands.
“We remain committed to driving transparent and sustainable solutions, to help accelerate development and build a more peaceful, fairer and greener world for all,” added Jorge Moreira da Silva.
In 2024, on behalf of 181 partners, UNOPS procured $1.7 billion in goods and services from more than 5,800 suppliers around the world. Of that, $799 million of procurement activities occurred in Least Developed Countries, $37 million in Small Island Developing States and $440 million in Landlocked Developing Countries.
More than one-third, or $622 million, of our procurement activities last year were conducted with government partners while the World Bank Group was the single largest partner by procurement volume, supporting $545 million worth of procurement activities.
2024 procurement results
Procurement once again played a significant role in UNOPS infrastructure delivery. In 2024, infrastructure was UNOPS largest procurement category, totalling $377 million. Health was the second-largest category, totalling $375 million.
UNOPS supports sourcing from local suppliers to promote local economic growth, especially in vulnerable areas. In 2024, nearly half – 47 per cent – of our procurement was from local sources.
“Public procurement is a catalyst for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. By embedding fairness, sustainability and transparency into every decision, we ensure that every dollar spent is transformed into tangible progress on decent work, social inclusion and a healthier planet for the communities we serve," said Anne-Claire Howard, UNOPS Director of Procurement.
'Purchase for Impact 2024' goes beyond the numbers – it highlights UNOPS key procurement achievements through case studies that showcase the real-world impact of UNOPS work, and the dedication of our people on the ground who make it happen.
