Supporting emergency response for flood-affected farmers and communities in Mozambique
UNOPS and the World Bank are supporting government-led recovery efforts after severe flooding heavily affected southern and central parts of the country.
Severe flooding at the start of the year displaced nearly 400,000 people across southern and central Mozambique. More than 700,000 hectares of farmland were affected, with more than 288,000 hectares of farmland destroyed. This impacted the livelihoods of more than 700,000 agricultural producers across the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane, Maputo, Nampula, Tete, Sofala and Zambezia.
To mitigate the negative impacts of the flood, an emergency flood response project – led by the government with implementation support from UNOPS, with $66 million in financing from the World Bank under the Sustainable Rural Economy Project – is providing vital agricultural items to impacted communities.
Under the leadership of the government of Mozambique, UNOPS will procure and deliver seeds, fertilizers, basic tools and storage bags to flood-affected families as part of the initiative. Families will also receive fishing equipment and veterinary support to help restore livelihoods.
This initiative reflects our joint commitment to supporting farmers and communities in rebuilding their livelihoods and strengthening food security.
Using an electronic voucher system to ensure transparent and efficient distribution of items to registered participants, the initiative will reach nearly 240,000 households.
Part of broader World Bank efforts to improve resilience in flood-affected regions, thousands of families across multiple provinces will benefit.
