UNOPS will join several other UN organizations – the International Organization for Migration, UNFPA and UN Women – to support the government of Mozambique's efforts in providing vital assistance and strengthening resilience in crisis-affected communities in northern Mozambique.

With more than $1.4 million in funding from the government of Japan and implemented under the leadership of the government, the three UN organizations will each work on projects that focus on improving access to water, sanitation, hygiene, health, women’s rights and gender equality. The initiative will also help strengthen recovery and social cohesion, in collaboration with local authorities and affected communities.

"These projects that we are launching today are a clear demonstration of solidarity from the government of Japan and will contribute significantly to meeting the immediate and urgent needs of the affected populations," said Luisa Meque, President of Mozambique's National Institute for Disaster Management.

The projects will reinforce vital assistance to the most vulnerable people – including women and children – and lay the groundwork for recovery in communities affected by violence and displacement.

To strengthen the resilience of the healthcare sector in Cabo Delgado Province, UNOPS will procure three ambulances for three districts in the conflict-hit province.

"UNOPS reinforces its commitment to strengthening the health system's emergency response capacity," said Sofia Goinhas, UNOPS Country Manager in Mozambique.

"Japan is honoured to continue supporting the people of Mozambique," said Ambassador Keiji Hamada. "This contribution reflects our commitment to practical, people-centred assistance and to working together with partners to promote stability and resilience in conflict-affected communities."
