UNOPS Executive Director at the UN General Assembly
COPENHAGEN, 19 AUGUST 2026 | The Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Jorge Moreira da Silva, will be in New York from 20 to 25 September 2026 to attend the United Nations General Assembly High–level Week 2026
He will be available to give media interviews on:
- UNOPS work in fragile and conflict-affected areas, including Gaza, Ukraine, Haiti, Syria, Myanmar and Afghanistan. Over half of UNOPS portfolio is in fragile and conflict affected areas.
- Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz: Mr. Moreira da Silva leads the UN Task Force on the Strait of Hormuz. He can speak about the impact of disruptions in the Strait on global food security, trade and supply chains, the UN’s efforts to facilitate the transit of fertilizers and other critical supplies and a confidence-building mechanism to prevent a humanitarian crisis.
- Climate/energy transition: With armed conflicts ongoing and energy crisis impacting several countries around the world, the case for investment in the clean energy transition has never been stronger. To unlock the potential of renewable energy, countries can expand and modernize their energy grids and invest in storage.
Mr. Moreira da Silva has been the Executive Director of UNOPS since April 2023. He has decades of experience working on development, climate change, energy and environment in the public and development sectors. He has travelled extensively to UNOPS operations in the Gaza Strip, Ukraine, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Sudan, Syria, Mozambique, among others.
