Years of compounding crises have caused a rapid deterioration in access to quality and inclusive education and learning in Lebanon. Recent conflict has had a significant negative impact on children’s lives, destroying or heavily damaging school infrastructure and exacerbating an already challenging education situation.

Implemented by UNOPS, the project will rehabilitate and equip public schools severely affected by these crises. Beyond improving infrastructure, the project will provide capacity-building training to school representatives. This training is designed to empower educators and administrators, enabling them to effectively scale up the Ministry’s School Improvement Plan initiatives – and ultimately foster sustainable educational recovery and resilience throughout Lebanon.

“Japan considers that Lebanon’s public education sector is central to the country’s social and economic recovery, and a key investment in its youth and future,” said Masayuki Magoshi, Ambassador of Japan in Lebanon.

“This JICA initiative is part of our continued support to ensure that students in Lebanon have access to a fostering learning environment and opportunities to reach their full potential," he added.

This project leverages JICA's ongoing commitment to Lebanon's education sector and UNOPS expertise in sustainable infrastructure. By addressing the impact of years of conflict, it aims to enhance the quality of education services and, in turn, ensure improved learning outcomes for children and youth.

With a growing number of humanitarian crises and emergencies, how we respond is critical to supporting those most in need, including children.

“Together with JICA and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the project aims to contribute towards a brighter and better learning environment for children and the future generation of Lebanon,” added Muhammad Usman Akram.
