GLOBAL GOAL SUPPORTED:

The State of Palestine faces high levels of unemployment, especially among the youth, as a result of significant economic challenges in recent years. This has resulted in increased rates of poverty and food insecurity as well as a lack of socio-economic opportunities.

Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) are essential to tackling high levels of unemployment – particularly among youth – by fostering sustainable and inclusive economic prosperity and social stability.

In support of the Palestinian Ministry of Education and the Municipality of Yatta, KOICA has developed a project for the establishment of the Yatta Vocational School in the Hebron Governorate. UNOPS will support the $5.5 million project through the design and construction of the school and its various facilities, while KOICA will dedicate $1 million to provide the needed capacity building and training for the TVET staff and teachers. The four-year project will advance education and foster inclusive economic and employment opportunities for youth.

We are pleased that UNOPS, through KOICA, will be able to build and equip a vocational school in the West Bank that will serve young Palestinians and provide opportunities for better education and employment.

UNOPS will also procure and install furniture, IT equipment, workshop equipment and heavy machinery for the facility, among other items.

“Since 2009, KOICA has been implementing the Programme of Education for Youth with a budget of $33.6 million. We expect that this new Yatta Vocational School will help fulfill the aspirations of Palestinian youth,” said Minjong Kim, KOICA Country Director in Palestine.

The facility will feature lecture rooms and a practice building that will be used to provide a range of vocational training programmes. It will also house a library, health room, cafeteria and various administrative offices.
