Statement on the death of UNOPS colleague and his family in Gaza

Statement by Under-Secretary-General and UNOPS Executive Director Jorge Moreira da Silva, on the death of UNOPS colleague and his family in Gaza.

As the unimaginable, tragic events in Gaza continue, it gives me great sadness to announce the death of Loai Yaghi and several members of his family in Gaza last night, following an air strike in Deir Al Balah.

Loai was a dedicated colleague and friend to many in our team in Gaza.

Since 2014, he worked as a driver in support of UNOPS Gaza operations in the most difficult of situations. He was a critical part of the team.

Colleagues who worked with Loai remember him as dedicated, committed, and always willing to help. In recent weeks Loai had been working tirelessly to support the Gaza response.

This loss has deeply affected us all.

Loai will be sorely missed and always remembered. We will be forever grateful for his commitment, and are doing our utmost to support his wider family and our colleagues in Gaza during this time.

On behalf of UNOPS I want to convey my deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to all colleagues and everyone who knew Loai. May Loai and his loved ones rest in peace.
