Improving health and nutrition services for women and girls in Niger
The government of Niger is partnering with UNOPS to strengthen the country’s health infrastructure through the construction of five new district hospitals.
With one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, Niger faces an urgent need to improve healthcare access for women and girls.
With $25.5 million in financing from the World Bank, UNOPS is supporting the government with the construction of five new hospitals in Maradi and Zinder. The hospitals will deliver critical services, including reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent healthcare as well as essential nutrition services to some of the country’s most vulnerable populations.
Part of the 'Improving Women’s and Girls’ Access to Improved Health and Nutrition Services Project' (also known as LAFIA-IYALI) and implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, the project will expand access to essential health and nutrition services in underserved areas of the country.
“Strategic infrastructure investments help create lasting positive change for many, ensuring that the most vulnerable – especially women and children in rural and underserved areas – have access to the healthcare they deserve.
UNOPS is leading the review and completion of technical studies and designs for the hospital sites as well as managing construction works. Once completed, the hospitals will provide much-needed access to healthcare in remote areas, reducing the need for long-distance travel and helping ensure that women and girls receive timely and appropriate care.
This will contribute to broader national goals on gender equity and sustainable development by enhancing health outcomes and creating new social and economic opportunities in affected communities.
