President of Mauritania inaugurates two new modern judicial facilities
Under the Justice Reform Support Programme (PARJ) in Mauritania, funded by the European Union, UNOPS handed over two new facilities that will strengthen the judicial system and provide communities with better access to justice.
Marking a milestone in the country’s justice sector reform, the President of Mauritania inaugurated the new palace of justice in Nouakchott Sud and the new courthouse in Moughataa El Mina during a ceremony attended by representatives of UNOPS, the European Union and the Ministry of Justice.
“The construction of these two facilities [...] reflects the complementarity between international efforts and national priorities aimed at building a modern, efficient, and effective justice system,” said Mohamed Ould Soueidatt, Minister of Justice, during a broader ceremony marking a series of inaugurations held in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of National Independence of Mauritania.
Implemented by UNOPS on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and funded by the European Union, the initiative supported the construction of three new facilities. With the handover of the final two, the infrastructure component of the PARJ programme is now completed, following last year’s delivery of the court in the town of Boutilimit.
The three newly constructed courts have been designed with sustainability in mind. The buildings are energy-efficient and include features that promote inclusion and respect for human dignity, such as access ramps for persons with reduced mobility and spaces that ensure the safety and confidentiality of users.
“Justice [...] is also delivered through the spaces in which legislative frameworks come to life. […] Modernized judicial infrastructure is a key to more effective, more equitable and more accessible justice, leaving no one behind,” said Dhouha Ali Hamroun, UNOPS Director in Mauritania.
“Access to justice and respect for human rights [...] lie at the heart of our partnership, which is why the European Union supports the government’s efforts to carry out essential reforms aimed at strengthening the rule of law,” said Joaquín Tasso Vilallonga, EU Ambassador to Mauritania.
The new facilities strengthen the presence of justice at the local level and promote an administration of justice that is fairer, more accessible and more humane.
