Working with the Government of Canada to support Ukraine's health sector

New medical equipment donated by the Government of Canada will help speed up diagnostic procedures and increase patient safety in Ukraine.

Due to outdated technology, the Clinical Hospital of the State Border Guard Service in Odessa could only perform a limited number of X-ray examinations.

On 13 June 2017, His Excellency Roman Waschuk, Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine, officially handed over a digital X-ray machine to Colonel General Viktor Nazarenko, Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Donated by the Government of Canada, the X-ray machine will be used by the Clinical Hospital of the State Border Service of Ukraine in Odessa.

"Thanks to the taxpayers of Canada, we were able to provide this valuable donation to the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service," said Ambassador Waschuk.

The Government of Canada also funded the purchase of an ultrasonic diagnostic system and an 'ear, nose, and throat' combined medical device for the Central Clinical Hospital of the State Border Service of Ukraine in Kyiv.

"This cooperation is very important to the State Border Guard Service because this donation saves the lives of service personnel," said Colonel General Nazarenko.

The new X-ray machine will reduce the time it takes to receive results – from up to four days to no more than 15 minutes. In addition, it will now be possible to share X-ray images online, helping to reduce costs since X-ray films and chemicals will no longer be needed. The new equipment also increases patient and medical personnel safety as it emits 50 percent less radiation.

"We are very happy to be selected as a partner of the Governments of Ukraine and Canada, and to support them in two of our areas of expertise: project management and procurement," said Andriy Buryakovskyy, UNOPS Ukraine Head of Operations and Deputy Head of Office.

The donated medical equipment will improve conditions for the more than 20,000 examinations and surgeries both hospitals in Kyiv and Odessa perform annually.

Implemented by UNOPS, the donation of $2 million (Canadian) worth of equipment (including safety equipment for the State Border Guard Service) is part of the 'Enhancing Ukraine's Border Security' project.
