AI to robotics: Argentina’s youth prepare for a digital-first future

The world of work is changing rapidly, and young people need new opportunities to develop their digital, creative and problem-solving skills.

In Buenos Aires, new TUMO centres are redefining how secondary school students learn beyond the classroom.

These innovative learning spaces encourage students to explore subjects such as animation, generative AI, robotics, programming, music, video game development and graphic design through a self-directed, hands-on approach to nurture their creativity and curiosity. As they develop new skills, they can build a portfolio of creative projects to showcase their abilities and open doors to future opportunities.

Working alongside the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires, UNOPS has helped equip and establish three TUMO centres across the city, creating inspiring environments where thousands of students can discover new interests, develop future-ready skills and turn their ideas into reality.

Meet some of the young people whose futures are being transformed.

TUMO centres give secondary school students the freedom to explore subjects ranging from artificial intelligence and robotics to animation, video game development, music and 3D modelling. Through hands-on, self-directed learning, they discover new interests and develop their skills.

Across the three centres, open learning spaces, creative labs, music studios and multimedia facilities will provide around 20,000 students each year with access to technology and learning environments that many would otherwise never experience.

TUMO is designed to make high-quality technology education accessible to all young people, regardless of their background. By providing free access to advanced equipment, teachers and creative learning spaces, the centres help bridge the digital divide across Buenos Aires.

For Lorenzo, TUMO is a place to discover new interests and make friends.

“It’s a pretty good place; it’s very interactive. You have a good time because you can make friends. You can learn about things that you might find interesting. You discover things that you might not even have known existed before.”

Like many students, Martina says the greatest benefit is having the freedom to discover what inspires her.

Beyond technical skills, TUMO encourages creativity and self-expression, giving students the confidence to pursue their ambitions.

“I’m thinking of becoming a singer, because I already write songs and here at TUMO I’m learning how to put them together. I took the music workshop and we wrote a song there; I said: I want to write a cumbia,” says Lourdes.
