Supporting agricultural growth in Ethiopia

Agriculture is a leading sector and a vital source of economic growth in Ethiopia. UNOPS sustainable procurement service is helping the country build up its national and regional capacity in this area.

In support of the Government of Ethiopia's implementation of the Growth and Transformation Plan II (GTP II), UNOPS procured and delivered 30 farm tractors and 40 hardtop vehicles with a total budget of USD 2.5 million, in partnership with the Ethiopian Institutions of Agricultural Research.

The tractors will help improve the work of agricultural research institutions in the country at the federal level and at regional levels (in Amhara, Gambella, Oromia, Tigray, and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region). The hardtop vehicles will enable staff members from agricultural research institutions to more easily conduct field visits.

The use of these vehicles will also help to promote technologies that enhance productivity and increase the commercialization of the agriculture sector.

This project will benefit Ethiopia's Agricultural Growth Programme, which supports smallholder rural farmers who are engaged in agricultural activities, such as crop production, livestock husbandry and agro-forestry.

The items purchased for this project were procured through UN Web Buy, which has been upgraded to UN Web Buy Plus, UNOPS new leading-edge eCommerce platform.
