Crisis response in Gaza
The conflict in Gaza has had devastating consequences for the people of the State of Palestine. Alongside partners, we're actively supporting the emergency humanitarian response.
To address urgent needs and strengthen humanitarian response efforts, we're working closely with the UN and our partners to bring life-saving supplies into Gaza, including through the implementation of the UN 2720 Mechanism to help safeguard and ensure the swift delivery of critical aid.

“After weeks of daily attempts, UNOPS in Gaza retrieved 280,000 litres of fuel from storage tanks last night. But this positive step covers only a day's worth of most critical needs. 12 June 2025
“After weeks of being denied access to our fuel storage tanks in Gaza – and accessible fuel running critically low – a mission to retrieve fuel stocks was finally coordinated this morning. It has been forced to turn back by close proximity shelling, with one fuel truck driver sustaining injury. Meanwhile new fuel stocks have not been allowed in.Fuel is a literal lifeline in Gaza – it runs hospital generators, ambulances, bakeries, water pumps. This is why our team is operating at such great risk, to keep these critical services running. But they will stop functioning in the coming days if we cannot access fuel storage tanks or get new supplies in. We need to be able to run our fuel operation and our team should not have to risk their lives to do so.” Jorge Moreira da Silva, UNOPS Executive Director

UNOPS Executive Director just concluded a joint visit to Gaza with Sigrid Kaag, Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator. UNOPS was tasked by the UN Secretary-General to operationalize and manage the mechanism to facilitate, coordinate, monitor and verify humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Since 7 October 2023, hostilities in the Gaza Strip have led to significant loss and damage. More than 66,000 Palestinians have died and over 168,000 have been injured*.
Severe damage to critical infrastructure combined with ongoing hostilities and limitations on the movement of people, fuel and other goods has seriously impaired the delivery of basic humanitarian aid.
To provide immediate assistance, UNOPS is supporting the operationalization of the UN 2720 mechanism to facilitate, coordinate, monitor and verify humanitarian relief consignments to Gaza.
The UN-mandated mechanism is designed to enhance the speed and efficiency of aid delivery into Gaza and involves orchestrating large-scale aid distributions through the various land and maritime corridors.
Against unimaginable hardship, UNOPS is committed to staying and delivering for the people of Gaza, enabling access, enhancing security, and working towards sustainable peace and development.
